Riverdale started off as a rural community. However, things began to change in the 1850s when the Grand Trunk Railway steamed its way through the region; industry began to flourish, which brought many labourers into the region who built the first homes in Riverdale. Leslieville is located in south Riverdale and is named after George Leslie, who, along with his sons, founded the Nurseries which served as the key in building up the area. The Leslieville Public School is one of the first buildings in the area. Built in 1863, their slogan "The Maple Leaf Forever" was composed by their first principal, Alexander Muir. This slogan ties directly to Leslieville's most famous landmark, the maple tree, which served as Mr. Muir's inspiration for the slogan. This maple tree is designated by a historic plaque at the intersection of Laing Street and Memory Lane - just like Leslieville.
